God’s greatness is on display throughout all creation: His creative power and genius are evident in ‘the works of His hands’[1], His great and abundant generosity are exhibited in His desire to “freely give us all things,” [2] and most clearly and unmistakably of all, His greatness and goodness are manifested by His marvelous grace in the salvation which has ‘appeared to all men.'[3]
God’s grand design, however, is to use the ‘foolish’, the ‘weak’, the ‘base’, the ‘despised’ and the ‘nothings’ in order to shame the wise and the strong, and to nullify that which appears great, in order to eliminate all human pride and boasting [4]. There is one thing we can boast about however – Him!
Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.
